Eunice poked the something wiry with a stick . . .

Eunice, balancing the something wiry on the end of her stick, headed for the kitchen.

Years of helping her ex in the building trade had taught Eunice many things, including the ability to never be disgusted or fazed—by anything. Her ex was a man with a temper who worked alongside the sort of men whose sense of humor involved dead rats in lunchboxes and locking comrades in toilets that didn’t flush. She had spent her years of marriage fixing what her ex broke in a temper while developing a talent for selective breathing. Nothing made her sick. She could scrape mold from roadkill, unblock a sewage pipe without the slightest hint of eye watering, and had even stood by Patsy holding her hair during a bout of food poisoning without one silent retch.

Nothing revolted her, apart from porn—which was one of the reasons why she left her ex, but that is another story.

She swung the wire in front of Patsy’s face. “Look what was causing the trouble.”

“Rather not.”

“Never seen anything like that before,” Eunice said, now washing the wire under the tap.

Patsy tossed a treat at Izzie. “Do you have to do that in the sink?”

Eunice, engrossed in her examination, didn’t answer. Finally, with a robust tap on the kitchen sink, she looked at the love of her life. “All gone,” she smiled, planting a kiss on Patsy’s head. “You ready to inspect the damage?”

Patsy and Eunice headed back into Bunnie’s patio.

Patsy pushed opened the door to a clutter of broken potted plants blocking the entrance.

“What the fuck?” said Eunice.
